Compass and Dividers

Compasses were used to draw circles or semicircles, while dividers were generally used to transfer measurements along a route on paper. A compass is simply a pair of dividers with a lead holder or steel-nibbed pen substituted for one divider point. The points are normally of steel, while the body is brass.
