Steel Nibbed Pen

Quill pens were needed for writing smooth, flowing script in letters and communiqués, but for technical drawing, steel-nibbed pens were required. Many individuals in the living history community do not recognize the existence of these instruments during the Revolution, but they were used heavily in appropriate circles. These pens are usually turned brass with a steel nib.

Eighteenth century instruments have small wing nuts for tightening, rather than circular thumb screws.
