Three Legged Staff

The three legged staff (now known as a tripod) was used to support many of the instruments used by surveyors, including the circumferentor, theodolite, wye level, and plane table. Mostproper 18th century examples feature wooden legs attached to a turned wood central point, which may be round or cylindrical. A brass ball and socket joint attaches the tripod to the instrument.
